Riding the Energy of the Fire Horse

Everyone I speak with lately is feeling the intense energy that has emerged over the last month. This palpable energy has made it feel like everyone’s lives are blowing up. Not only is there a high level of activity and forward momentum beyond one’s control, but everything is on fire! Problems below the surface are erupting, health issues are exacerbated, and egos are blowing up. The Lunar New Year has passed and the year of the fire horse is upon us in all its rage and glory. 

What energy does the year of the Fire Horse hold?

The energy of the horse is one of freedom, movement, passion, and excitement. Imagine a wild horse running across a plain. Every muscle is fully engaged in this joyful act. Limitless potential. Fiercely independent. The horse is already associated with fire, but adding in the ruling element of fire this year makes this compound energy doubly potent. And potentially dangerous… 

My favorite anecdote for this time is what happened during the Olympics in the world of ice skating. In the men’s skating, Ilia Malinin, an American, was a lock for the gold. It was so guaranteed that everyone else was skating for silver or bronze. He went into the Olympics with an arrogant attitude, even calling himself the “Quad God”. During his final Olympic skate, he fell on his ass… TWICE! It was a brutal upset for him that he says turned his former self “into dust”. 

By contrast, in pairs figure skating, Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara from Japan, were in 5th place going in for their final skate. Upon completing this skate flawlessly, Ryuichi Kihara collapsed on the ice, sobbing with gratitude and joy, completely unable to hold back his honest emotions for all the world to see. They were awarded Japan’s first ever gold medal for pairs figure skating.

There are two morals of these stories that should be carried into working with the fire horse. 

First, expect the unexpected. Nothing is guaranteed this year. If you think you know what is going to happen, think again. Anything and everything can tumble from its pedestal or rise to heights unimagined. Even if you try to prepare for every possible outcome, something you never considered will happen that you will not be prepared for. Yield your need for certainty and open to the energy of the unknown.

Second, mind your ego. Ego is hot and fiery. When something hot and fiery meets another energy that is hot and fiery, it becomes too much and will burn up in a blaze that leaves nothing but ash in its wake (like Ilia’s ego). Its like a ember landing on dry brush in a windstorm - there’s nothing you can do to prevent it setting off a massive fire that will envelop everything in its path. Relax the need to have everything “my way or the highway” and open to the possibility that there are many roads that lead to the same destination. 

How Can I Work With This Energy?

While it may feel counterintuitive, to ride this wild energy, you must adhere strongly to patience, humility, and disciplined effort (perseverance). 

Patience is absolutely required to navigate this energy. Already this year, I’ve noticed that when I want something to happen immediately, I hit an obstacle. Whether it is a temporary computer glitch that prevents me from sending a message on time or an unexpected road detour that makes me three minutes late, it seems small frustrations pop up whenever I want something to go a certain way. This is how patience comes in this year. The universe is on its own timing right now and you are at the mercy of it. Be patient and understand that this year there are forces at work beyond your control. Imagine that you must wait for a fire to go out completely before you can move forward. Getting angry or using shortcuts will only add more fuel to the fire. You try to put out the fire with a cup of water, but the water spills onto your feet. The sand you have to smother it is blown away in a strong gust of wind. You are relegated to sit and watch the fire exhaust itself and wait until the last embers die out. Then you can move on. 

Staying grounded in humility is essential. Any flare-up of ego, self-centeredness, smugness, entitlement, etc. will result in you being struck down. Humility is about staying open rather than locked. Mutable rather than fixed. Flexible when tossed into uncharted waters. The energy here is more like a duck floating on the water’s surface rather than the rock stuck in the mud at the bottom of the pond. Often humility is misunderstood as an associate of shame. Not so. Humility is from being humble, or knowing one’s place in the world accurately. A moth doesn’t need to try to act like a butterfly to feel fulfilled. They each hold their own unique magic. Know yourself and your limits. It is better to soften your ego enough to speak up when you are out of your element rather than derail the entire venture. Seek assistance when you need it and rely on those with more experience or expertise to help you through. 

This year, slow and steady wins the race. Perseverance and substance will win out over quick and flashy. Being thoughtful, mindful, and disciplined about your actions will help create the foundation for you to reach new heights. Do not take shortcuts as it could lead to collapse. When you encounter an obstacle (and this year will provide plenty) take a moment to pause and reflect. Avoid using aggression to bulldoze your way past obstacles or giving up entirely. Remember that obstacles don’t necessarily mean you are on the wrong path. Sometimes they are simply lessons you need to learn before reaching your objective. Stay the course and avoid distraction to reach your goals. This is the time that things that are rotten will be torn up by the root, so any crack in your foundation could be exposed and you may be forced to start over. Slow down and be intentional about how you are moving forward and living your life right now.

This year of the fire horse is full of incredible potential. So much of what you long for is possible right now. With such potential available, there is also the high chance of crashing and burning when you move forward without thinking. This year will offer the beautiful reminder that when you fall, get back up on that horse. We will all be taking our lumps, but those that will achieve their greatest goals will be the ones who learn how to ride this energy swiftly and safely.
